Lesser Goldfinch - Southlake, Tarrant Co., TX January 4, 2012 - Female Lesser Goldfinches are distinctly smaller than American Goldfinches and have some slight barring on the back and stronger yellowish coloration (right). Males will have a similar pattern on back and may have some remnant dark coloration around head in winter months before breeding plumage (left). American Goldfinches are perched on the top and bottom for comparison.
