Cackling Goose. November 1994. Hagerman NWR, Grayson County.
Cackling Goose (third from top) is shown here flying with two larger forms of Canada Goose and a Lesser Canada Goose (B. c. parvipes) which flies at the top. Note the short, stubby neck of the Cackler - the smallest of the four birds [Ken Nanney].
Cackling Goose was determined to be a full species and split from Canada Goose in 2004. It is a fairly common wintering bird in North-central Texas, although not out-numbering Canada Goose and its associated forms in the study area.
