Although Smith's Longspurs have been observed throughout many of the eastern counties, it is generally regular only in certain grassy fields near the Lake Tawakoni dam. It can be irregular or absent altogether during warm winters. Other winter observations within the study area are scattered and uncommon, but this is partially because the bird can be difficult to find in it's preferred habitat - medium-to-tall grasses.
