Highlights of this tape: YELLOW-GREEN VIREO* and OLIVE WARBLER*
On the Upper Texas Coast migrant passerines are beginning to arrive. An
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER (Contopus cooperi) was seen at a private residence on
West Galveston Island on the 4th. An ALDER FLYCATCHER (Empidonax alnorum was
reported the same day. BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS (Vermivora pinus) were reported
from both Sabine Woods and High Island on August 5th, as were AMERICAN
REDSTARTS (Setophaga ruticilla). A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK (Phuecticus
ludovicianus) was found in the mulberry trees at the entrance of Boy Scout
Woods, also on the 5th. Sabine Woods had the following warblers: CANADA
WARBLER (Wilsonia canadensis), HOODED WARBLER (Wilsonia citrina), KENTUCKY
WARBLER (Oporonis formosus), and YELLOW WARBLER (Dendroica petechia). A male
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD (Selasphorus rufus) was reported today, the 6th from a
yard one mile north of Loop 610 in Houston. This seems to be a bumper year
for Rufous Hummingbirds. Keep your eyes open at your feeders.
In the Rio Grande Valley a YELLOW-GREEN VIREO* (Vireo flavoviridis) is still
being seen and heard at Sabal Palms. The bird has recently been seen along
the new boardwalk on the Resaca Trail. For other Valley specialties, please
call the Rio Grande Valley hotline at (956) 969-2731.
A juvenile SOOTY TERN (Sterna fuscata) was reported over a drained crawfish
pond in southern Calhoun County between Port O'Connor and Indianola on July
30th. Also found were 2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS (Limosa haemastica) The female
MASKED DUCK*(Nomonyx dominicus) was last reported on July 27th in Rockport.
The bird had been on the pond on the South side of A1 Hill Road between
Rockport and Aransas Pass. To get to the pond from Rockport, take the 35
bypass towards Corpus Christi. A1 Hill Road is the second turn on the right
just past the flashing yellow lights at the HWY 188 (Sinton road) junction.
Drive ¾ mile (past Julie's Backyard Bistro) and you will see the pond on the
left - about 1/4 mile before the road ends at FM 1069. If you see this bird,
please call or email to report it.
A female OLIVE WARBLER* (Peucedramus taeniatus) was found at Big Bend
National Park on August 4th. The bird was seen on the Emory Peak Trail about
200 yards above the intersection with the Pinnacles Trail. Please update the
alert if this bird is refound.
