Notes on Specific Birds
Santa Rosa is a fairly large national park in the
northwest corner of Costa Rica near the Nicaraguan border. Most
birds in the "Guanacaste region" list can also be found here.
It's a good place for all of the Guanacaste
specialties, but there is a evergreen gallery forest along one of the trails
which is particularly good birding. Long-tailed Manakin, Barred
Antshrike, and Western-Slaty Antshrike can be found here. A
Nutting's Flycatcher was found in the drier habitat.
I have also been told this park is a good place
for Plain Ground Dove on the drive in.
Santa Rosa also has some of largest Guanacaste
lizards in the country.

Throughout Costa Rica
All birds here can be included in any list at most locations conditional
to the appropriate habitat
This list includes birds seen commonly throughout
my trips to Costa Rica. These birds were either quite common or easily seen in the appropriate habitat and season.
Admittedly, as a U.S. birder, I became a slacker when it came to listing the
more common North American migrants.
In the case of shorebirds, your best bet is the Tarcoles River mouth near Carara or near the city of Puntarenas. Mudflats
are near the highway.
