Notes on Specific Birds

Guanacaste National Park is a nice park for several reasons. It has a reasonable dirt road that runs around the circumference which allows a lot of stop-and-park birding. Since it is not a well-visited park, it's an easy birding spot for birders with an SUV. It also has a nice combination of both Guanacaste and Caribbean slope birding. This can be particularly handy if you have only a short time in Costa Rica and are coming through the Liberia airport.

Birds here are unlike birds in most of the Guanacaste province or like the birds at Santa Rosa or Palo Verde national parks. Guanacaste National Park has birds of the Central Cordillera. Bird life here is reminiscent Rincon de Vieja National Park or perhaps Heliconias Lodge.

We had nice looks at Laughing Falcon, Violet-headed Hummingbird, and a variety of Caribbean-slope birds. Special sparrows - Rusty, Botteri's, and Grasshopper sparrows are found in this vicinity of Costa Rica although a guide may be necessary. I didn't pursue these sparrow specialties on my trip.

Guanacaste National Park

Throughout Costa Rica
All birds here can be included in any list at most locations conditional to the appropriate habitat

This list includes birds seen commonly throughout my trips to Costa Rica. These birds were either quite common or easily seen in the appropriate habitat and season. Admittedly, as a U.S. birder, I became a slacker when it came to listing the more common North American migrants.

In the case of shorebirds, your best bet is the Tarcoles River mouth near Carara or near the city of Puntarenas. Mudflats are near the highway.
